Usage Notes or Etymology

The word kamana is an orthographic fusion of the preposition ka (an older variant of ke) and the interrogative mana, written as a single unit under the “Van Ophuijsen Spelling System” officially in use from 1901 to 1947. This system was introduced by Charles Adriaan van Ophuijsen alongside Nawawi Soetan Makmur and Moehammad Taib Soetan Ibrahim, and was the standard for publications, newspapers, and colonial government documents in the Dutch East Indies. The use of oe for the /u/ sound was one of its most distinctive features, making words like poelang, soedah, and maoe strong textual markers of that era. After the Soewandi or Republican Spelling was enacted on March 19, 1947, the spelling shifted to kamana with u replacing oe. Under the modern Perfected Spelling (EYD) introduced in 1972, the form was further normalized as two separate words, ke mana. Today, the archaic fused form serves as a historical and stylistic marker in literary works, old manuscripts, and diachronic linguistic studies.

Real-world Usage

English Translation
The father surely wanted to know where his child had run off to, as it had been two nights without returning home.
