Usage Notes or Etymology

The word kaloe is the Van Ophuijsen orthographic rendering of the conditional conjunction kalau. The “Van Ophuijsen Spelling System”, formulated by Charles Adriaan van Ophuijsen, was officially introduced in 1901 during the Dutch colonial administration of the Dutch East Indies. Under this system, the vowel sound /u/ was represented as oe, transforming kalau into kaloe. This spelling was widely used in official correspondence, newspapers, and Malay-Indonesian literary works until the mid-20th century. Following Indonesia's Declaration of Independence in 1945, the Indonesian government officially adopted the “Soewandi Spelling” (also known as the Republican Spelling) on March 19, 1947, replacing oe with u, thus standardizing the spelling to kalau. In the Soewandi era, this word was written as kalau. The conjunction itself has deep roots in Classical Malay and has consistently served as a conditional clause marker across centuries of literary, epistolary, and official texts.
