Usage Notes or Etymology

The word djaoe is the archaic spelling of jauh under the “Van Ophuijsen Orthography” system, standardized in 1901 by Ch. A. Van Ophuijsen alongside Nawawi Soetan Makmur and Mohamad Taib Soetan Ibrahim. In this system, the /u/ sound was rendered as oe, thus transforming jauh into djaoe. This spelling was widely used in colonial-era newspapers, official documents, and Malay literary works throughout the Dutch colonial period until the mid-20th century. It was officially superseded by the “Ejaan Republik” (Soewandi Spelling System) in 1947.
