Gpp

“Gpp” is an acronym derived from the phrase tidak apa-apa (“it's okay”), formed through abbreviation by taking the initial consonants of each word: g from ga or gak (the informal form of tidak, meaning “not”), the first p from apa (“what” or “anything”), and the second p from the reduplication of apa. This acronym emerged during the early era of Short Message Service (SMS) usage in Indonesia, approximately in the late 1990s to early 2000s, when users sought to reduce character counts in messages to minimize per-character SMS costs. As digital communication technology evolved, “gpp” persisted and expanded across various platforms, from instant messaging services such as BlackBerry Messenger and WhatsApp, to social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. It has since become an organic part of Indonesia's national digital conversational lexicon, used across generations and regions, reflecting a process of nativization of digital slang rooted in the practical demands of communication.
