Usage Notes or Etymology

The word hidoep is the Van Ophuijsen spelling of hidup, the official orthographic system for the Malay language codified by Ch. A. Van Ophuijsen in 1901 and used widely until March 19, 1947. In this system, the vowel sound /u/ was consistently represented by the digraph 'oe', following Dutch orthographic conventions. Hidoep appears frequently in colonial-era newspapers, literature, and personal correspondence up to the early independence period. After the Soewandi Spelling (Republican Spelling) was officially enacted in 1947, the word was respelled as hidup, replacing 'oe' with 'u'. The word traces its roots to Classical Malay hidup, with cognates across the Nusantara languages such as urip in Javanese and idup in the Betawi dialect.
