The change from 'dj' to 'j' occurred with the reform of Indonesian spelling. In the Soewandi Spelling System (1947-1972), this word was still spelled 'sadja', but it was later simplified to 'saja' in the Perfected Spelling System (EYD) which has been in effect since 1972.
