Usage Notes or Etymology

The word padanja is the Van Ophuijsen orthographic rendering of the modern standard form padanya, composed of the preposition pada (at/to/from) and the third-person enclitic -nya. The Van Ophuijsen spelling system, officially adopted in 1901, used the letter j to represent the /y/ sound in Malay. This spelling was prevalent in colonial-era newspapers, legal documents, and Malay literature until it was replaced by the Republican Spelling (1947) and subsequently the Perfected Spelling system (1972).

Real-world Usage
