Nomor or Nomer? Tracing the Roots of Numerical Terms

The variant 'nomer' arises from phonological influences of local languages, particularly Javanese. In Javanese, many words containing the 'o' vowel tend to be pronounced with a more open articulation or closer to the 'e' schwa sound in certain dialects, leading people to write what they phonetically hear in speech.

The word 'nomor' is borrowed from the Dutch 'nummer', which itself originates from the Latin 'numerus'. During the assimilation into Indonesian, the double consonant 'mm' was simplified, and the middle vowel 'u' shifted to 'o'.

The use of 'nomer' is ubiquitous in informal conversations, classified ads, and daily social media interactions. It is perceived as more casual and less rigid than its formal counterpart, making it the preferred choice in non-academic contexts throughout Indonesia.
