Kerdjaannja

The word kerdjaannja is the Van Ophuijsen orthographic form of the modern Indonesian pekerjaannya. This spelling system was widely used during the Dutch colonial period until the mid-20th century, before the adoption of the Ejaan Republik (1947) and later the Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan (1972). The root word kerja derives from the Sanskrit kārya, meaning an action or task to be performed. The circumfix ke-an forms an abstract noun, while the suffix -nja is the archaic equivalent of the modern -nya, functioning as a third-person possessive marker. This form appears frequently in colonial Malay newspapers such as Bintang Timoer and Medan Prijaji.
