Usage Notes or Etymology

The word “menoelis” is the Van Ophuijsen orthographic form of the modern Indonesian word menulis (to write). The Van Ophuijsen spelling system, introduced by Dutch linguist Charles van Ophuijsen in 1901, systematically replaced the vowel sound /u/ with the digraph oe, following Dutch orthographic conventions. This spelling was officially used in colonial-era newspapers, government documents, and Malay literary works until it was replaced by the Republican Spelling System (Ejaan Republik) in 1947. The root word tulis originates from Classical Malay and has cognates across many Nusantara languages.

Real-world Usage
