Usage Notes or Etymology

“Pengadjar” is the Van Ophuijsen orthographic rendering of the modern Indonesian word pengajar (teacher/educator), derived from the root ajar (to teach/instruct) with the agentive prefix peng-. The Van Ophuijsen spelling system, codified in 1901, represented the /j/ phoneme using the digraph dj, transforming ajar into adjar and consequently pengajar into pengadjar. This spelling was standard in official colonial documents, Malay-language newspapers, and literary works throughout the Dutch colonial period and into the early years of Indonesian independence. It was progressively replaced by the Republican Spelling of 1947 and ultimately superseded by the Perfected Spelling System (EYD) in 1972.
