Usage Notes or Etymology

The word prokem is a product of a secret word-formation system developed among street youth in Jakarta during the 1980s. This system, known as “bahasa prokem” (prokem language), is a linguistic code formed by inserting specific syllables into base words to conceal meaning from outsiders. The etymological origin of prokem traces back to the base word preman, the Indonesian term for an individual outside formal employment who exercises intimidating control over a particular area. The formation process involves inserting the infix -ok- between the initial consonant cluster and the first vowel of the base word, then truncating or modifying the final syllable. From preman, the initial cluster pr- is retained, -ok- is inserted, and the ending is altered, yielding prokem, a form opaque to the uninitiated. Culturally, this word reflects the identity of urban marginal groups who created their own language as a marker of in-group solidarity and as protection from external surveillance, including law enforcement. “Bahasa prokem” subsequently became one of the foundational precursors to modern Indonesian youth slang, known today as “bahasa gaul”.
