Usage Notes or Etymology

The word “toendjoek” is the old spelling of “tunjuk” based on the Van Ophuijsen orthography. This spelling was widely used during the Dutch colonial period until the mid-20th century in the Dutch East Indies, before being replaced by the Soewandi spelling and then the Enhanced Spelling System (EYD). This spelling change reflects the phonological and orthographical evolution of the Indonesian language from Classical Malay influences and adaptation to the Latin writing system. The use of “oe” for the /u/ sound and “dj” for the /j/ sound are characteristic features of the Van Ophuijsen spelling, now only found in historical contexts or proper nouns.
