Usage Notes or Etymology

The word kae is a distal demonstrative in the “ngoko” register of the Javanese language. It is used to refer to objects located beyond the immediate physical reach or close sight of the interlocutors. Etymologically, the Javanese demonstrative system recognizes three degrees of distance. Iki for proximal, iku for medial, and kae for distal. In Javanese oral tradition, the use of kae is frequently accompanied by a chin gesture or eye movement towards the intended object.
