Parno

The word parno is a clipped or shortened form of the loanword paranoid, derived from the English paranoid, which ultimately traces back to the Greek paranoia, a compound of para (beyond, outside) and nous (mind). In clinical settings, paranoia refers to a mental disorder characterized by delusions of persecution or grandeur. However, in the evolution of Indonesian urban slang, the word underwent simultaneous semantic narrowing and broadening, being used more lightly to describe everyday excessive worry or suspicion without clinical connotation. This word formation follows a common syllabic clipping pattern found in Indonesian prokem and urban slang, similar to bokap from bapak or mager from malas gerak. The term parno gained popularity among urban Indonesian youth around the 2000s and has since spread nationally through social media and pop culture.
