Usage Notes or Etymology

The word punika originates from Classical Javanese linguistic tradition and is an integral part of the Javanese speech-level system known as unggah-ungguh basa. It belongs to the krama register, a level of speech used to express respect toward an older interlocutor, a person of higher social standing, or in formal situations. Etymologically, punika is the krama counterpart of the ngoko forms iki (this, proximal), iku/kuwi (that, medial), and kae (that, distal). In the krama register, punika is distance-neutral, meaning it can replace all three proximal/distal forms depending on context. Beyond its demonstrative function, punika also serves as a copula linking a subject to a nominal predicate, equivalent to “is” or “are” in English or “adalah” in formal Indonesian. Its usage is widespread in formal Javanese conversation, traditional ceremonies, classical Javanese literary texts (such as the Serat Centhini), as well as in wayang shadow puppet performances and other traditional arts.

Real-world Usage

English Translation
