The word sebabnja is the written form of sebabnya under the “Van Ophuijsen Orthography”, officially in use in the Dutch East Indies from 1901 to 1947. This orthographic system was designed by Dutch linguist Charles Adriaan van Ophuijsen together with Nawawi Soetan Makmur and Moehammad Taib Soetan Ibrahim to standardize the writing of the Malay language. Under this system, the modern third-person possessive suffix '-nya' was rendered as '-nja', transforming sebabnya into sebabnja. The root word sebab itself is derived from the Arabic sabab, meaning rope, connection, or cause. After the Soewandi or Republican Spelling was enacted on March 19, 1947, the suffix '-nja' was retained in that system as well, and it was not until the Perfected Spelling (EYD) of 1972 that the form was fully modernized to sebabnya. This word is commonly found in personal letters, newspapers, and official documents from the colonial era and early years of Indonesian independence.
