Usage Notes or Etymology

The word anaknja is a spelling from the “Van Ophuijsen Orthography”, officially enacted during the Dutch colonial period in 1901. In this orthographic system, the clitic suffix -nya was written as -nja, following Dutch phonetic conventions that represented the sound /ɲ/ with the digraph nj. The root word anak originates from Classical Malay and had been widely used across the Indonesian archipelago long before the colonial era. The suffix -nja functions as a third-person singular or plural possessive marker, equivalent to the modern Indonesian suffix -nya. After the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence in 1945, Van Ophuijsen spelling was gradually replaced by the “Soewandi Spelling” or Republican Spelling, officially enacted in 1947. In the Soewandi system, the suffix -nja was still retained, though other changes were made such as replacing oe with u. The suffix -nja was ultimately replaced by -nya in the Perfected Spelling (EYD) of 1972.

Real-world Usage

Soedah tentoe bapa maoe dapat taoe, kamana anaknja berlariken dirinja, sebab soedah doca malam tida poelang-poelang. (Sudah tentu bapak ingin tahu, ke mana anaknya melarikan diri, sebab sudah dua malam tidak pulang-pulang.)

English Translation
Of course the father wanted to know where his child had run off to, since the child had not returned for two nights.
