Nuduhake

Nuduhake derives from the root word tuduh in Old Javanese, which is related to the Malay-Indonesian word “tunjuk” in the sense of directing attention toward something. Through the morphological processes of Javanese, the root tuduh acquires the nasal prefix n- (as a marker of active verbs) and the suffix -ake which functions as causative-benefactive, producing the form nuduhake with the nuance of “performing the act of pointing for the benefit or knowledge of another person”. In the Javanese sociocultural context, the use of nuduhake frequently appears in the ngoko and krama speech registers, namely the informal registers used among close acquaintances or toward younger individuals. This word carries a strong relational dimension because the act of “showing” in Javanese culture is not merely informative, but also reflects a moral responsibility to share knowledge. The suffix -ake grammatically signals that the subject acts for or on behalf of another party, making this word pragmatically feel more altruistic than simply “displaying” something.
