Usage Notes or Etymology

The word perdjalan is the archaic spelling of perjalanan under the “Van Ophuijsen Orthography” system codified in 1901 by Ch. A. Van Ophuijsen alongside Nawawi Soetan Makmur and Moehammad Taib Soetan Ibrahim. Under this system, the /j/ sound was rendered as dj, transforming jalan into djalan and its derivative perjalanan into perdjalan or perdjalanan. The shortened form perdjalan without the suffix -an was commonly found in personal correspondence and popular texts of the colonial period, reflecting a more concise writing style. Following the implementation of the Soewandi Spelling in 1947, the word transitioned to perdjalanan, and was further simplified to perjalanan under the Perfected Spelling (EYD) in 1972. Its usage today is confined to historical documents, classical literature, and philological studies.

Real-world Usage

Seterimanja soerat ini, bapa djangan koewatir, sebab perdjalan saja masih djauh. (Setelah menerima surat ini, Bapak jangan khawatir, sebab perjalanan saya masih jauh.)

English Translation
Upon receiving this letter, do not worry, for my journey is still long.
