Usage Notes or Etymology

The word boeka is the “Van Ophuijsen orthography” spelling of buka, standardized in 1901 under the initiative of Ch. A. Van Ophuijsen alongside Nawawi Soetan Makmur and Moehammad Taib Soetan Ibrahim. In this orthographic system, the vowel sound /u/ was written as 'oe', thus rendering buka as boeka. The word is rooted in classical Malay and was widely used in newspapers, literature, and official documents from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Following the Proclamation of Independence, the Van Ophuijsen system was replaced by the “Soewandi Spelling” (Ejaan Republik) in 1947, at which point boeka was standardized to buka. The usage of this word reflects the sociolinguistic landscape of Malay and Indonesian society during the Dutch colonial era, when high Malay served as a lingua franca in both formal communication and popular literature.
