Inggih

The word inggih originates from classical Javanese vocabulary and functions as the affirmative marker within the “krama inggil” speech level, the most refined register of Javanese used to express deep respect toward social or age superiors. It directly corresponds to iya in ngoko (informal) and nggih in the more relaxed krama madya register. Within the Javanese social stratification system, the use of inggih embodies the cultural value of unggah-ungguh (Javanese etiquette), which reflects hierarchical social awareness expressed through language choice. Subordinates, students, and younger individuals are expected to use this word when responding to or agreeing with superiors, teachers, or elders. Using the casual iya in such contexts is considered impolite or even rude. In Central Java and Yogyakarta, inggih remains highly active in both formal conversations and daily interactions involving social status differences. In East Java, particularly in the more ngoko-dominant Suroboyoan dialect, the word serves as a distinctive marker of formal situations or traditional ceremonial contexts.
