Following Indonesian independence, the “Soewandi” or “Republican Spelling” system of 1947 replaced oe with u, shifting the written form from taoe to tau or tahu. The form taoe appears frequently in colonial-era newspapers, literary works, and official documents. It also commonly appears in fixed phrases such as dapat taoe, meaning to come to know or to obtain information about something.
