Usage Notes or Etymology

The word taoe is the orthographic rendering of tahu (to know) under the “Van Ophuijsen Spelling System”, officially implemented during the Dutch colonial period from 1901 onward. In this system, the vowel sound /u/ was written as oe, thus transforming tahu into taoe. The word traces its roots to Classical Malay tahu, with cognates found across related Austronesian languages. Following Indonesian independence, the “Soewandi” or “Republican Spelling” system of 1947 replaced oe with u, shifting the written form from taoe to tau or tahu. The form taoe appears frequently in colonial-era newspapers, literary works, and official documents. It also commonly appears in fixed phrases such as dapat taoe, meaning to come to know or to obtain information about something.

Real-world Usage

Soedah tentoe bapa maoe dapat taoe, kamana anaknja berlariken dirinja, sebab soedah doea malam tida poelang-poelang. (Sudah tentu bapak ingin tahu, ke mana anaknya melarikan diri, sebab sudah dua malam tidak pulang-pulang.)

English Translation
The father surely wanted to know where his child had run off to, as two nights had passed without his return.

Representative of real-world usage and contextual accuracy.
