Usage Notes or Etymology

The word rene originates from Classical Javanese and is a contracted form of mrene, literally meaning “toward here” or “to this place”. Its root is connected to the Javanese spatial deixis system, which distinguishes three orientational points: rene (to here, near the speaker), rono (to there, far from both), and kono (there, near the listener). In everyday usage, rene belongs to the Ngoko Lugu register, making it appropriate among peers, from elders to younger people, or in intimate settings. Its variants include mrene (the fuller form), mreneo (with stronger imperative emphasis), and neng kene meaning “here” as a static locative marker rather than a directional one. Using rene toward an elder or a respected person is considered impolite, and the Krama equivalent mriki or ngriki should be used instead.

Real-world Usage
