Usage Notes or Etymology

The word seterimanja is the archaic spelling of the modern Indonesian seterimanya, formed from the prefix se-, the root word terima (to receive), and the suffix -nja (the old equivalent of -nya). This orthography follows the Van Ophuijsen Spelling System, codified in 1901 by Charles Adrian van Ophuijsen together with Nawawi Soetan Makmoer and Moehammad Taib Soetan Ibrahim. It was the official standard for administrative texts, correspondence, and Malay literature until it was replaced by the Soewandi Spelling System (Ejaan Republik) on March 19, 1947. Under the Soewandi system, the word retained the form seterimanja before eventually evolving into seterimanya under the Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan (EYD) in 1972. Its function as a temporal marker was very common in both personal and official correspondence during the colonial and early independence periods, reflecting the formal and orderly style of classical Malay prose.
