Penggunaan ejaan Djakarta mengikuti sistem Van Ophuijsen yang membedakan era administratif kolonial akhir dan awal kedaulatan republik sebelum standarisasi EYD pada tahun 1972 menghapus grafem dj. Secara sosial, penggunaan nama ini membangkitkan nuansa tempo doeloe yang kental dengan estetika pasca-kolonial.
